Reading Challenge 2021

Finding a new book to read can be difficult, so each year my wife and I compose a reading challenge. The list is compiled of old books, new books, and books you should have read. It is a fun way to open yourself to new ideas and fantastic stories.

For example,
Read a book...
… that is an author's debut novel.
… that you were supposed to read in school, but didn't.
… that is a historical fiction.

A Calm Scribe Christmas

Lost Letters

As the year 2020 winds down, we enter another Christmas season. This year has been unlike any we have been through in recent memory, with many challenges to keep us separated. During this time, I was contacted and asked to write a Christmas story based in my community. Having completed a Halloween story for the community, I was excited to take on this new challenge. After several weeks of consideration and consultation, I created an original story based around children and a giant living in the local woods. Watch for more details as I continue to work with this story through the year.

NYC Midnight Micro Fiction Challenge 2020

Through the challenges of the past year, I was able to focus and dedicate more time to my writing. From published editorial works to the beginning of a new novel, it has been a full year with contests included. I participated in the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge, and have now enter the NYC Midnight Micro Fiction Challenge. The prompts for my 250 word, 24 hours micro fiction were - Genre: Romance, Action: Tour,  Word: Target. The story is not long, but packs an emotional punch. Story Cube Fridays on Twitter and Instagram

To put it simply, writing can be hard. Ideas can be as fleeting as a hummingbird's sneeze in a windstorm. Many have created ways to combat this problem (fleeting ideas, not sneezing hummingbirds), one of which is Rory's Story Cubes. You simply throw the dice and create a story off the images rolled. You can make it as tough or a simple as you like. These dice have led me to create my own weekly creative writing inspiration, Story Cube Fridays. Follow @thecalmscribe on Twitter and Instagram and watch for hashtag #StoryCubeFridays to participate. Each Friday I post a photo of the roll of the week. The following Monday I post my official micro-story and encourage you to post yours, Remember, this is all in fun and there is no pressure to share your creations, though all are welcome!
